Make the Facebook Algorithm work for you

Where do you do most of your marketing? Most of you, like me do the majority of your marketing on Facebook, right? And I know at least a few of you are trying to find ways to “cheat” or “trick” the algorithm into showing your content to more people. The reality is there isn’t a way to cheat the algorithm. But you can make the Facebook Algorithm work for you.

Facebook, Facebook Algorithm

Fortunately, there IS a way to use the algorithm to benefit you. The whole purpose of the algorithm is to foster community across Facebook. It does this by showing posts to a small number people with common interest based on the keywords in the post and then expanding the reach of those posts based the interactions of that initial group. (We will be talking more about keywords later on.)

How do you start making the algorithm work for you? You have to first prove to Facebook that you are a real person. You have 3 places you can post that will affect your reach

1. Your personal profile. This is like your game piece in Monopoly. If you aren’t posting on your personal profile every day you aren’t giving Facebook enough information to consider you a “real person”. The algorithm simply doesn’t have enough information and you aren’t in the game.

2. Your Business Page. This is where you tell the world who you are and what you provide (not just the product you provide but the value you provide). This is where you will build relationships with new customers before they decide to shop with you. Your Business Page should follow the 80/20 rule (80% Personality and Value and 20% Sales). Additionally, you should only post ONE time per day on your business page if you have fewer than 10k likes/followers.

3. Your Closed Group. This is your community. This is where the people who are “your people” hang out. You can post as often as you’d like in this group based on what your specific community will tolerate. While you still want to keep the 80/20 rule, you can combine all three types of posts, personality, value and sales into the same post if you want. This is where you let your hair down and so do they.
